Jim Edenshaw was born in Queen Charlotte City, Queen Charlotte Islands, also known as Haida Gwaii, in 1955. This area is representative of the Haida nation, one of the primary nations to inhabit the northwest coast of Canada.

Jim began carving in 1979 at the age of twenty-four. He was very fortunate to have studied the northwest coast Haida style and technique in Vancouver, where a wide spectrum of artists contributed to his knowledge of the art. He began carving wood and quickly progressed to working with gold and silver. As well, he took on graphic design, designing on etched glass and occasionally dabbled in casting jewelry items. Jim has completed several designs for button blankets worn for specific ceremonials as well. For many years Jim resided in Vancouver with his family, until last year when he decided to move back to Haida Gwaii as a result of his wife’s passing.

Jim‘s attention to detail and fluid form, in keeping with the style of his ancestors, has set him apart from other northern artists engraving in metal. For this reason he has become known on an international level as collectors seek to own a unique jewelry item that he has created.
