William Cook was born June 22, 1974 in Alert Bay on Vancouver Island. Encouraged and guided by his grandfather, Gus Matipi, William began his artistic career making prints and painting. He discovered his aptitude for carving in 1992. After apprenticing under Patrick Seaweed, learning to work in silver and gold, William became an accomplished jewelry artist.
The grandson of Chief Cecil Wadhams and the great grandson of Chief Alvin Alfred, William is very connected to his culture. He uses traditional Kwakwaka’wakw design elements in his carvings, inspired by his heritage and fellow artists. William’s brother, Rande, is also an acclaimed artist, specializing in prints and Bentwood Boxes.
