Louis Arnaryuinnaq

Baker Lake

Born in 1968, Louis is young compared to many of his fellow Baker Lake carvers. He also sets himself apart in style and material. Louis works in Basalt, the traditional stone of Baker Lake; however, he also carves in black Soapstone occasionally, which has the same matte black colour as Basalt but is much softer.

Louis’ aesthetic is much more exaggerated than that of other Baker Lake carvers. Typically, the Baker Lake style involves using very few incisions and working around the stone’s natural contours. Conversely, Louis manipulates the stone into a more distinguishable shape. The necks of his characters are often elongated or thrust downwards, augmenting the head. While his carvings take on a more contemporary style, he maintains the molten lava aesthetic to which Basalt so nicely lends itself.

Louis’ work offers a unique perspective on traditional Baker Lake carving, and his style is sure to evolve even more as he ages.
