Iqaluk was born to his parents, Miazi and Taqiasuk, in June of 1952 in Cape Dorset, Nunavut. Early in his youth, however, he moved to northern Quebec. After moving back to Cape Dorset as a teenager, Iqaluk began carving in 1969. He prefers to depict human figures, owls, and scenes from Inuit stories and myths.
Having been surrounded by exemplary Inuit artists in his home of Cape Dorset, Iqaluk has learned outstanding carving techniques. His attention to detail is extraordinary, as is his eye for shape. Iqaluk often incorporates contemporary elements into his work, such as colour and exaggerated formline.
