Eliyakota was born in a small, coastal town outside of Cape Dorset in May of 1939. She moved to Cape Dorset as a child in order to live with her mother after her father died. She remained there with her adopted daughter until her death in November 1987.
Eliyakota began her artistic career in the 1960’s, pursuing drawing as her first medium. These drawings were mostly of bird forms, often combined with human or spirit elements. In 1970, her drawings were translated into prints for the annual Cape Dorset collection, recognized for their excellent symmetry and precision. From there, her artistic career flourished.
