Shawn Hunt

Heiltsuk Nation

Shawn Hunt was born in Vancouver, BC on July 10, 1975. He is of Heiltsuk, Scottish and French descent. Both his father, Bradley Hunt, and his brother Dean Hunt are artists.

Shawn apprenticed for five uear under the tutelage of his father, during which time he was taught the principals in wood and jewelry carving. Shawn has receieved academic training as well, holding a dipolma in Studio Art from Capilano College and a BFA, with a focus in sculpture and drawing, from the University of British Columbia.

The exposure to both an apprenticeship and formal institutional studies has truly shapes the works that Shawn produces. He work depicts characterists of a contemporary society, rendered in traditional form. The merger of stories offers multiple contexts for the view to relate to.

Awards:

2011, BC Creative Archievement Award for First Nations' Art
