Darryl Baker

Coast Salish (Tsawout) Nation

Darryl Baker was born in 1976 as a member of the Tsawout First Nation, one of the five bands that constitutes the Saanich Nation. He comes from a long hereditary line of artisans- the renowned LaFortune family.

Although he began carving at the age of twelve, it was later on in his teenage years that his uncles Doug Aubrey and Tom LaFortune took him under their guidance and taught him the techniques of the traditional Coast Salish style. Darryl in only a short amount of time has worked in and enjoys creating pieces of all genres: from poles to masks to smaller pieces such as bowls.

While still in his learning phase, this young artist continues to create pieces that prove his knowledge of his heritage and exhibit truly extraordinary craftsmanship.
