Nuyalia Tunnillie is a young, up and coming artist from the Cape Dorset region in Nunavut Territory. He was born in Iqualuit on May 21, 1987. Being part of a family of carvers, Nuyalia began carving at the age of eleven or twelve. He learned by watching his brother Ashevak Tunnillie and his grandfather Qavaroak Tunnillie carve.
Nuyalia works in serpentine, marble, antler and whalebone, favouring bears, walruses, seals, and birds as his preferred animal subjects. Other themes that he chooses to explore include human figures engaged in activity, Mother and child, Transformations, and Modern arctic scenes. His style has been described as being strong and simple.
Cape Dorset is probably the most famous art producing community in Canada's north. The Cape Dorset sculptural style is rooted in both wildlife and the spirit world, but has incorporated a love of the flamboyant, the dramatic and the decorative.
