Douglas Horne Jr.

Coast Salish Nation

Also known as Bear, Douglas was born in Victoria in 1982 into a family of carvers. He was influenced by his father, Doug LaFortune, at a very young age and began working on oddments from his work. Over the years, he has brought his art to a new realm of carving and is expected to be as masterful with his tools as his father. It was not until recent years that Douglas has taken carving as a career and has been able to exhibit both medium and large scale works in various settings. Bear has been commissioned to carve masks, sculptures and very intricate pieces of wall art and all of these works have had to meet Douglas' high personal standards. As Douglas continues to progress and challenge himself in his art, he gains a better grasp of technique and innovation. Coming from a traditional cultural background where family heritage is treasured, preserved and passed on to future generations, Douglas embraces his identity and communicates this connection in his work.
