Pootoogook Jaw was born September 2, 1959 in Cape Dorset and currently resides in Iqaluit. His mother, Melia, is a Cape Dorset artist, and his father Joe, a master carver. Pootoogook Jaw has been carving for over 18 years, and learned his craft by watching his father along with other talented carvers in his South Baffin community. Following in his father’s footsteps, he is also considered a master carver—a distinction given to only a select few artists. The pride he takes when he sets blade to rock is revealed in his results.
Pootoogook Jaw uses a wide range of subjects in his works, and his style varies depending on the nature of the stone that he is working with. At times, his sculptures have multiple figures interacting and are almost obsessively detailed; at other times, his work is simpler and more iconic. His quiet sense of humour often surfaces in his work.
